Everyone has an opinion of what the most valuable skill you could have. Some of them may be backed by facts, but they always feel, impersonal. In this post I will tell you what, in my personal experience, is the most valuable skill you could have.
Usually, people say that you should go grab what you want. If that is true, why is it that timing is the most important factor in making a business? Truth is, just going for your dreams is not enough to be successful.
That is where tactical patience comes in. Tactical patience is waiting to make sure the conditions are right for success. In other words, tactical patience is not as much waiting as knowing when to take action. You cannot achieve success without knowing when to take action. Anyone can take action.
Some Examples Of Tactical Patience
Me and some colleagues went to a bar. When the bar tender asked me what I wanted to drink he found that the first three I asked for were tapped dry. The fourth drink I asked for actually went through. Here was how the conversation went.
Bar Tender: “Are you ok?”
Me: “Of course, why?”
Bar Tender: “Usually people yell at me if the second drink they want is not available.”
Me: “Really? Like it’s your fault. No worries, every beer here is good, you just have to look.”
After that, he gave me a beer on the house. When you show patience, people are happily surprised, and frequently return that kindness.
Get The Best Results
Another example is when I was deer hunting. Hunting requires patience, deer will (almost) never walk right in front of you. Even if they do, you must wait for the right shot. However, if you wait too long, you will never get your deer.
When I hunted, a deer was about 150 yards away and it very rarely held still. I had to wait 10 minutes to take the shot. I had no idea exactly when I had to take the shot, but I knew what was needed for a great shot. The deer would need to be still, I needed a good angle of sight at the front end of the deer, the wind would have to be fairly still, there are many factors. No matter how many factors there were, I knew what I could control. I made soft clicking noises to make the deer stop and I waited for the deer to be more out in the open. I downed the deer with a near perfect shot. That deer was not moving after the shot which would decrease the tenderness of the meat. I may never experience that tender of deer meat again.
I pulled a shot that is normally considered difficult because I had tactical patience, calm mentality, and good aim. My hunting skills were non-existent. In fact, my experience in hunting up to that excellent shot sums up to 2 hours. Yeah, literally I have downed a buck within the 2nd hour that I started hunting. I’d be lying if I said luck was not involved. Some people have hunted for almost a decade and never downed a deer much less a buck.
Tactical Patience Is The Most Valuable Skill In Everything
Tactical patience, in its simplest terms, is knowing what is required for the best results and taking action when those criteria are met. Name one situation where tactical patience would not help. In finance, people have built careers and many times great wealth by timing markets. I always recommend trying to buy when markets are low, but not to try to time the market much beyond that.
As if timing investments was not enough to show the value of tactical patience, a TED talk explains how timing is everything when it comes to a making a business. I even explained how certain times can produce vacuums for certain consumer demands. Truth is sometimes, timing out when you start your business may be the greatest factor in its success.
And what relationship have you been in that timing had no effect on? Most professional relationships require some win-win that is only achievable with correct timing. As for romantic relationships, I dare you to ask someone what they had planned for to meet up with the person they are in a romantic relationship with. That or, you could watch almost any special by Iliza Shlesinger if you are scared of the answer.
Life is full of many great moments. Few of them will be immediately available, and the ones worth having will never be immediately available. The most valuable skill you could have is tactical patience so you know what is required to take hold of these good opportunities. The greatest achievements required tactical patience. And you could use this skill to help you forge your wealth.
